Baked Cream Cheese French Toast Casserole

This baked cream cheese French toast casserole is the perfect make-ahead breakfast or brunch. It's rich, decadent, and sure to be a crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients
  

French Toast Casserole
  • 1 loaf french bread, brioche, or challah 12-14 ounce
  • 8 ounces full-fat brick cream cheese softened to room temperature
  • 2 Tablespoons confectioners’ sugar do not leave out
  • 3 teaspoons pure vanilla extract divided
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2.25 cups whole milk
  • 0.75 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.6666666666666666 cup packed light brown sugar
Topping
  • 0.3333333333333333 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 0.3333333333333333 cup all-purpose flour spooned & leveled
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter cold and cubed
  • maple syrup and/or confectioners’ sugar optional: for topping

Method
 

  1. Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan. Cut bread into 1-inch cubes. Spread half in pan.
  2. Beat cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla until smooth. Drop spoonfuls on bread. Layer remaining bread on top.
  3. Whisk eggs, milk, cinnamon, brown sugar, and remaining vanilla. Pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate for 3-24 hours.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Remove pan from refrigerator.
  5. Whisk brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Cut in butter. Sprinkle over bread.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes until golden brown. Drizzle with maple syrup or dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve warm.
  7. Cover leftovers and store in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use challah or brioche bread.
