Chili Crunch (aka Crispy Chili Oil)

Ingredients
  

Main ingredients
  • 1.5 cups avocado oil or vegetable oil
  • 6 cloves garlic (thinly sliced)
  • 2 shallots shallots (finely diced)
  • 3 star anise star anise
  • 2 cinnamon sticks cinnamon sticks
  • 0.5 cup red chili flakes
  • 0.5 cup chopped peanuts
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce, tamari or coconut aminos
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp paprika or gochujang powder
  • 1 tbsp white sesame seeds

Method
 

  1. Simmer the oil, then cook garlic and shallots for 3 minutes until golden.
  2. Add star anise and cinnamon, cook for 4 minutes.
  3. Stir in chili flakes and peanuts, cook for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and add soy, honey, paprika, and sesame seeds.
  4. Remove star anise and cinnamon, cool, then transfer to jar and store.

Notes

Store in the fridge for best freshness.
