Method
- Grease the inside of your crockpot (at least 6-quart size).
- Place the cubed bread into the greased crockpot.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread in the crockpot. Gently press down on the bread to ensure it's soaked in the mixture.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the bread mixture.
- Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6-8 hours, or on high for 2-3 hours. Cooking times may vary depending on your crockpot.
- The casserole is done when the bread is set and no longer liquidy. You can test this by inserting a knife into the center; it should come out relatively clean.
- Let the casserole cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup and fresh berries, if desired.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use challah or brioche bread. You can also add chocolate chips or nuts to the casserole.
