  • 1 loaf day-old brioche or challah bread cut into 1-inch cubes (about 8 cups)
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries plus extra for topping
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Whipped cream for garnish (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for garnish (optional)

Method
 

  1. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Spread bread cubes in the dish and sprinkle with blueberries.
  3. Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Pour custard over bread and berries; press gently.
  5. Refrigerate overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Drizzle with melted butter. Bake for 45-55 minutes.
  7. Cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with toppings.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use challah bread. Adjust baking time based on your oven.
