  • 1 loaf brioche bread cut into thick slices or cubes (about 8 cups)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter for greasing the baking dish
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Fresh strawberries or berries for garnish (optional)
  • Whipped cream or a dollop of crème fraîche optional
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish

Method
 

  1. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Place brioche slices or cubes evenly in the dish.
  3. Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt.
  4. Pour custard over brioche, press lightly, cover, and refrigerate overnight or for at least 6 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 45-55 minutes, until golden brown and set.
  6. Cool, dust with powdered sugar, and serve with maple syrup, berries, whipped cream, and mint.

Notes

For an extra rich flavor, use challah bread instead of brioche.
