Method
- Arrange bread slices in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, slightly overlapping.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all bread is soaked.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the bread.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours).
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove plastic wrap and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup sugar evenly over the top of the bread.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown and the custard is set.
- Let cool slightly before serving. The top should be crisp and caramelized.
Notes
For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard mixture.
