Ingredients

French Toast
  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread cut into 1-inch thick slices
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar for topping

Method

  1. Arrange bread slices in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, slightly overlapping.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, 1/2 cup sugar, vanilla extract, and salt.
  3. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all bread is soaked.
  4. Drizzle the melted butter over the bread.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours).
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Remove plastic wrap and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup sugar evenly over the top of the bread.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown and the custard is set.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. The top should be crisp and caramelized.

Notes

For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard mixture.
