  • 1 loaf French bread about 14 oz, cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Fresh berries or maple syrup optional

Method
 

  1. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Grease baking dish and spread bread evenly.
  3. Pour custard over bread, pressing down to soak. Refrigerate overnight.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F. Let casserole come to room temperature.
  5. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then uncovered for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  6. Drizzle with melted butter and dust with powdered sugar.
  7. Serve warm with berries or maple syrup if desired.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use challah or brioche bread. You can also add a streusel topping before baking.
