  • 1 loaf French bread, challah, or brioche about 1 pound, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 cup cream cheese cut into small cubes (optional swirl)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cup butter melted (for topping or streusel)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Method
 

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange half of the bread cubes in the bottom.
  2. Sprinkle blueberries evenly over the bread. Dot with cream cheese if using.
  3. Top with the remaining bread cubes.
  4. Whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Pour egg mixture over bread and berries, pressing gently.
  6. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove plastic wrap.
  8. Drizzle melted butter evenly over the top.
  9. Bake for 45-55 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
  10. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use brioche bread and full-fat milk. Adjust baking time based on your oven.
